About

My name is Rick Pesavento, and in 2009 I made a career transition from the business world to the nonprofit sector (mostly Sales to Fundraising but also other areas as well). I wanted to share not only the experiences and challenges faced by making this move in general, but also some observations on how the two sectors differ and how I used previous sales and business skills along with techniques learned from a Master’s Degree in Psychology to fit nonprofit fundraising and operations.

This Blog is offered free of charge or fees with the objective of supporting those who are currently working in the nonprofit as well as those considering a career move to do good work in the world. I hope you find this unique perspective beneficial not only in making a similar career change, but also to support your efforts if you are already involved in the nonprofit sector.

Why a Blog?

I graduated with a Master’s of Science Degree in Counseling Psychology and discovered unintended benefits from this unique training. What I found was that much of the information and strategies that I learned in the psychology training translated very well to sales and customer service responsibilities. I was unintentionally utilizing the techniques learned in becoming a counselor/therapist to establish stronger working relationships. So much so that many of my supervisors (owners, sales managers, customers service managers) often asked how I was able to connect so easily with customers. Truth is, I did not know myself, but I did realize that I was on to something. When I moved to the nonprofit, I began experiencing similar results in fundraising, again just doing what I was trained to do. Finally I discovered that the techniques I learned in psychology were very useful for revenue generation (sales/fundraising) as well as customer service and stewardship.

I truly enjoy teaching, coaching and mentoring based on not only personal experience, (sales and fundraising), but also techniques learned in psychology that can help revenue generating performance in supporting great causes. This short background shows the motivation behind sharing some of these techniques as well as experiences and insights to move from the for-profit to the nonprofit. As mentioned in entries throughout, I hope you find it beneficial, whether making the career move, adjusting from sales to fundraising, or looking for techniques that can support your efforts in both fundraising and sales.
