The Career Move to the Nonprofit

Rick Pesavento, M.S.

My name is Rick Pesavento, welcome to my Blog! In 2009 I made a career transition from the for-profit sector to the nonprofit world. In this blog, I try to address three separate variables related to that move:

  1. Adjusting from a for-profit position to a nonprofit role.
  2. Switching from Sales to Fundraising, and the various strategies that I have found helpful in both.
  3. The advantages that specialized training in Psychology provided me for building fundraising and/or sales relationships.

Whether you have made the change, considering a change, or looking for ideas to improve fundraising and/or sales relationships, I hope you find my experiences helpful.

The Blog Entries Fall Into Three Categories:

For-Profit to Nonprofit

Observed differences and similarities between for-profit and nonprofit operations.

Fundraising Strategies

Adjustments designed to support the move from sales to fundraising, as well as shared experiences that I have found helpful.

Behavioral Fundraising Techniques

Counseling strategies that help support donor engagement.

Sales to Fundraising

Sales and Fundraising are similar but not the same. I have addressed some of the differences within these blog entries, as I have experience in both sales and fundraising. Surprisingly, there have been multiple unanticipated discoveries of how effective counseling/therapy techniques can be in building donor relationships. I hope you find these techniques and insights helpful in your own relationship-building / fundraising efforts.
